Smart Use of Basin Taps Will Cut Your Use of Water

Tuesday November 9, 2010

Buying a set of brand new basin taps is quite an exciting thing to do. But let’s face it, whatever set you get will result in one thing happening – you will probably still use too much water.

So when you buy your next set of basin taps, how about starting to use them more sensibly as well?

For example if you have to wait a short while for your hot water tap to bring you hot water, don’t just waste the water. Put the plug in, run it slowly and allow it to start filling. Quite often many people resort to waiting until the hot water starts to run before they put the plug in. But once it gets almost to the top of the bowl they realise they need to put some cold in too. If you did this at the start you would still have the water at just the right temperature. It does help to reduce waste too.

Another common thing that can happen with taps is that the washers will perish. This usually results in a dripping tap that can be annoying at best and wasteful at worst. If you find your tap is dripping make sure you refer back to the instructions you got when you bought it. Once you have done this you should be able to figure out what you need to do to fix it. Sometimes all it takes is a tightening of the tap parts to rectify it. But in many cases a new washer will be needed. Make sure you buy the right one and then spend the time fitting it to the tap to resolve the problem. This will ensure you don’t get any more drips or wasted water.

Quite often we use water with no thought as to what we might be wasting. This may not be the case if you have a water meter, since you will be billed for every drop you use. You soon clean up your habits in this case! But if you aren’t on a meter you will need to find other ways to change your habits. Every drop of water you save is a move towards being more responsible. The next time you have to fit new basin taps, think about getting some new habits as well. It could be the best thing you do.
